A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as pardoning festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – originating from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Annually, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
