Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
