The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in September and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.
