British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
