Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials voiced outrage after Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and asserted they should be detained and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.

The Recording That Sparked the Dispute

The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who in the past served in defense or intelligence positions.

"Like us, you all made an pledge to defend and uphold this founding document," the representatives declared in the short video. "At present, the risks to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our statutes are clear, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can decline illegal orders, you should decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow commands that violate the legal system or our national charter."

Trump's Angry Reaction

The video message seemed to trigger a furious reply from the former president.

On later in the week, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another publication, he declared: "This represents really concerning, and Dangerous to our United States. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Representatives Respond

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Democratic leadership published a joint statement censuring the statements.

"Political violence has no role in this nation," they declared. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all acted our country with tremendous national pride and excellence. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's appalling and harmful death threats against congressional representatives, and urge Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."

The opposition officials also said that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to guarantee the protection of these representatives and their families."

"Donald Trump must right away take down these unhinged social media posts and withdraw his violent discourse before he causes harm," the statement stated.

Lawmakers' Firm Reaction

The lawmakers who appeared in the video also released a declaration.

"We are veterans and security experts who care for this nation and took an pledge to protect and defend the constitution of the United States," they declared. "This commitment continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No intimidation, intimidation, or incitement will deter us from that important duty."

"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the statutes," they stated. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to obey only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."

They continued: "The entire nation must unite and denounce the ex-president's demands for our death and political violence. This is a time for principled stance."

Additional Partisan Comments

The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's remarks and shared on social media: "It's important to understand: the former president is calling for the capital punishment of government members."

He added: "This represents an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this right away and absolutely."

The Republican House speaker supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", labeling the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "It is very risky, you have leading members of the legislature instructing soldiers to defy commands, I think that's historic in American history."

The Conservative representative also allegedly informed journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to analyze the terminology and determine all that."

Administration Reaction

During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to kill elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the spokesperson said. "We see active officials of the US Congress who coordinated to orchestrate a digital communication to members of the US military, to serving soldiers urging them to ignore the president's lawful orders."

She stated: "The purity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that structure is compromised, it can lead to fatalities, it can cause disorder, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are essentially supporting."
