The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
