New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police issued video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in March.
