A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such medications must be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," described an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
