A whistleblower has disclosed the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities left behind confidential technology allowing the Taliban to locate local individuals who worked with western forces.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous in Danger

The whistleblower, called Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the data leak were advised to relocate and change their contact details to avoid detection from the Taliban.

MPs are currently examining the Conservative government's management of a serious leak of private information affecting almost nineteen thousand individuals who had requested to come to the United Kingdom to avoid militant rule.

The Information Breach Happened

A spreadsheet containing confidential details, including names, addresses and occasionally household data, was mistakenly released by an official stationed at British military command in February 2022.

The leak became known months later, when the names of nine people who had requested to move to Britain were posted on social media.

Taliban Capabilities

It appears there is a false assumption that militant forces do not have similar capabilities that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.

When questioned about whether the Taliban possessed advanced decryption, the source declared: “They have complete capability.”

Consequences of the Information Leak

Preliminary research presented to the investigation estimated that no fewer than forty-nine family members and colleagues of individuals impacted by the leak had been killed.

A superinjunction regarding the incident was enacted in last year and prevented relevant facts regarding the matter from being made public until recently.

Security Recommendations

Due to legal constraints, Person A and the volunteer organization associated with informed individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “concerns that certain devices had been intercepted”.

“We advised that they moved where feasible and switched their phone numbers. That constituted the two main details that, should militant forces had access to such data, would cause their location being found,” the source testified.

Disputed Conclusions

Person A argued that government assessment carried out by an ex-government employee had been wrong to state that the acquisition of the records by the Taliban was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.

“The crucial point is that these Afghans are in hiding from the authorities; they are in hiding. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”

The source explained horrific abuse endured by concerned people, comprising electric shock torture, waterboarding, and physical abuse.

“We have had young kids who have had bones crushed to try to get the family to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
