The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
When I enter the space, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and natural ability won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his career in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
However, the famed academy – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the academy. They prevented me from going back home,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough
This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to victory and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions
With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize in the future.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it instills confidence.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the game.
