TikTok Content Creators Driving Parallel Market for Unapproved Slimming Drug

A shadow economy for unlicensed slimming medications is propelled by social media fitness personalities and vendors on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.

Experimental Drug Gaining Popularity Online

Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning properties. Viewers are urged to message these accounts directly for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.

Active Trade on Social Networks

Additionally, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison images, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Vendors market the drug there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could help individuals lose up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Experts Express Worries

However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in users administering substances of uncertain source.

Some professionals said the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Implementation

Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators try to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but promotion and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer laws, risking fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Material Removal

According to TikTok, the service has removed problematic content and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The organization stated it was committed to maintaining the platform secure and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Marketplace Activities

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 members selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with thousands of members, populated with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for mixing or administering at residence.

Within minutes of joining one community, a seller shared contact information, where most transactions occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Within these communities, messages show black plastic packages with Royal Mail labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should last, sellers give conflicting responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Security Actions

A representative for Telegram said it actively monitored dangerous content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Warnings

“People are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind this drug is valid, these online products may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in interest to current price rises for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using social media. But fake treatments are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has already seen individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Producer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly significant health risks”.
