The vessels Friendship and Tigger Moth departed Isla Mujeres, Mexico on March 20th.

A extensive search and rescue effort is presently under way in the Caribbean region for a duo of lost sailboats carrying aid cargo en route from Mexico to Havana.

Naval Search Missions Launched

The Mexican government has deployed naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were carrying a minimum of nine crew members, per a official statement.

The boats had been expected to reach Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their arrival, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Aid to the Nation

The island nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island endures repeated nationwide blackouts.

"Both crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and each boat are outfitted with appropriate safety equipment and emergency beacons," a representative for the convoy stated.

The nine-person crew are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"We are collaborating completely with the authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Previous Humanitarian Mission

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and officially received another boat that had carried 14 tons of relief supplies to the country.

That ship, called "a new Granma" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, cycles and provisions.

Larger Geopolitical Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded efforts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the country began.

Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" shortages of supplies, with over 50,000 surgeries cancelled in Cuba due to power shortages.

Diplomatic tensions have intensified over the past months, with remarks from several officials underscoring the delicate nature of bilateral relations.

In response to certain comments, a high-ranking government figure insisted that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Indications suggest that initial phases of negotiations were initiated, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to discover the vessels and guarantee the safety of the sailors.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
